In 1982, Bring ‘Em Back Alive was rebooted in the form of a drama serial, starring Bruce Boxleitner, Cindy Morgan and Ron O’Neal, featured a reimagined Frank Buck. The series was shown in the United States from September 1982 to May 1983.
Some avid NUS Museum followers might remember this screening in 2011, when A/P Timothy Barnard introduced an episode of this drama series alongside a screening of Beyond Bengal with Dr Sandra Khor Manickam. I’m sure memories of the sarong clad orang asli, under threat from the uranium-searching Nazis, and awaiting rescue from Bruce Boxleitner’s Frank Buck, lingers on.
For those of you who are hearing this for the first time, here is the opening for the drama series (from 0:11 onwards)
Incidentally, Sultan Ibrahim of Johor, portrayed by African-American actor Ron O’Neal, is a major character in the drama. In Buck’s memoirs, he also fondly recollects time spent hunting with Sultan Ibrahim. In fact, Wild Cargo features a cameo by the Sultan. Unfortunately, the video quality is too bad to make out if it was really the sultan (see 1:09).
Join us as we watch the film that started it all on 13th March (TODAY!), 7pm, at the NUS Museum.
